Where to take your CDL skills test, state by state
Every official place to take the CDL pre-trip, backing and road test, copied from the state licensing agency's own list. You also get the test fee, how to book, what to bring, and whether you need Entry-Level Driver Training first. Each fact links to its source and shows when we checked it. If the state doesn't publish something, we say so instead of guessing.

What's on each state page
- Every official test site: DMV sites and state-approved third-party testers, with the classes they test, phone, address, and whether they rent a test vehicle.
- Fees: the skills-test fee (where the state publishes it), plus CLP, license and endorsement fees.
- How to schedule, the 14-day CLP wait, and what to bring on test day.
- ELDT: who needs Entry-Level Driver Training, and where to find a registered provider.

CDL skills test FAQ
What is the CDL skills test?
It is the driving part of the commercial license exam, in three segments taken in order: a pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control (backing maneuvers), and an on-road drive. You test in the class of vehicle you want to be licensed for.

How soon after getting my learner permit can I take the skills test?
Federal rules say a CLP holder cannot take the skills test in the first 14 days after the CLP is first issued.

Do I need Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) first?
Yes if you are getting a Class A or B CDL for the first time, upgrading B to A, or adding a school bus, passenger or hazmat endorsement for the first time. The training must come from a provider on FMCSA鈥檚 Training Provider Registry. It does not apply to a CDL or S/P/H endorsement issued before February 7, 2022.

Can I test at the DMV, or only at a school?
It depends on the state. Louisiana and Florida use approved third-party testers. Texas tests at DPS sites by appointment and also lets authorized third-party providers test their own students and employees. Each state page shows the official list.

Do I have to bring my own truck?
At Texas DPS sites, yes. You bring a vehicle that meets your class and passes a safety check. Many Louisiana and Florida third-party testers rent a test vehicle; the state lists show which ones do, and Florida lists the price with the vehicle.

How do you check this information?
Test locations, fees and rules come only from the state licensing agency鈥檚 own website, FMCSA, or the tester鈥檚 own site. If something isn鈥檛 published, we say so. Every entry shows when we last checked it.
