Colorado CDL Skills Test Locations

Colorado driver license offices give the CDL written tests but not the driving skills test. After holding your CLP for 14 days and finishing entry-level training, you take the skills test with a DMV-approved third-party testing unit. The DMV list, updated August 4, 2026, has 63 testing units.
Who gives the test in Colorado
All CDL skills tests are given by third-party testing units licensed by the DMV under Colorado Revised Statute 42-2-407. Testing units are government agencies, school districts, colleges, employers and private CDL schools; the DMV list (updated 08/04/2026) shows which classes and endorsements each one tests, but not whether it tests the general public. State driver license offices do not conduct driving tests.

How to schedule the skills test
- Book a "CDL Written Test" appointment at a state driver license office, pass the knowledge tests and get your CLP. The CLP is valid for one year and cannot be renewed. (dmv.colorado.gov)
- Hold the CLP for 14 calendar days before taking the skills test at an approved third-party testing facility. (dmv.colorado.gov)
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a registered provider, then contact a testing unit to schedule your skills test. (dmv.colorado.gov)
- After you pass, book a "First Time Appointment" at a driver license office to get your CDL. Bring your CLP; ELDT completion and your skills test result are verified in the system. You also need a DOT medical card on file and a Ten-Year Driving History form (DR 2172). (dmv.colorado.gov)

What to bring
- For the written tests and CLP: a valid Colorado driver license, proof of lawful presence (such as a U.S. passport or certified birth certificate; a REAL ID does not count), your Social Security number and two proofs of Colorado residence. (dmv.colorado.gov)
- For your CDL after the skills test: your valid CLP, a DOT medical certificate on file with the FMCSA National Registry, and a completed Ten-Year Driving History form (DR 2172). (dmv.colorado.gov)

Tips
- Many testing units on the list are employers, school districts and government agencies. Call ahead to ask whether they test the public before you plan a trip.
- Your knowledge test results are good for only one CLP issuance. Pick the right class and endorsements the first time, or you will retake every test.
- The DMV has suspended non-domiciled CDLs and CLPs since September 29, 2025; asylum seekers, refugees and DACA recipients are not eligible for a Colorado CDL.
