California gives CDL skills tests only at the 25 DMV CDL sites on its truck-driver page, including five Commercial Drive Test Centers (CDTC). Tests are by appointment; DMV does not publish a public third-party tester list.
Who gives the test in California
The DMV administers the CDL skills test (vehicle inspection, basic control and road test) at its CDL sites. Employers in the Employer Testing Program can certify their own drivers with a DL 170 ETP certificate instead of a DMV road test; there is also a military skills test waiver.

How to schedule the skills test
- Make a CDL skills test appointment online or by calling 1-800-777-0133. (dmv.ca.gov)
- Hold your CLP at least 14 days first. A CLP is valid 180 days and can be renewed once for 180 more; your application is valid 12 months. (dmv.ca.gov)
- You get 3 attempts in total to pass the vehicle inspection, basic control skills and road tests. (dmv.ca.gov)
- As of July 27, 2026, interstate drivers must have their medical certificate submitted electronically. (dmv.ca.gov)

What to bring
- Your valid CLP and an appointment confirmation. (dmv.ca.gov)
- A vehicle of the class you are testing for. For Class B you must test in a truck or bus, or other single unit of 26,001 lb GVWR or more. (dmv.ca.gov)
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
- ELDT applies to first-time Class A or B applicants, upgrades from B to A, and first-time passenger (P), school bus (S) or hazmat (H) endorsements. Your provider must be on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. (dmv.ca.gov)
- It does not apply if you held a CDL or the P, S or H endorsement before February 7, 2022. Some 49 CFR Part 383 skills-test exceptions also exempt you. (fmcsa.dot.gov)

Tips
- Fremont, Mountain View IBC and Santa Teresa have not been converted to the modernized skills test; every other site has.
- The five CDTC sites (Fontana, Fresno, Gardena, Rancho San Diego, West Sacramento) open at 7 a.m. most days.
- California is not issuing new non-domiciled CDLs right now; check the DMV CDL page if that applies to you.
