New Mexico CDL Skills Test Locations

Checked Oct 24, 2026 Official source: New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), Taxation and Revenue Department

New Mexico MVD does not give CDL skills tests itself. You take the knowledge tests and get your CLP at an MVD office, then take the skills test with an approved third-party examiner. MVD lists six public colleges and training centers that test the general public.

Who gives the test in New Mexico

All CDL skills tests are given by approved third-party examiners. Six public colleges and training centers test the general public (all applicants except school bus drivers). Operating Engineers Local #953 tests only its own members, NMDOT tests only state employees, and the Public Education Department tests only school bus drivers. The MVD examiner list linked from its CDL page is dated April 5, 2023.

How to schedule the skills test

  1. Pass the CDL knowledge tests at MVD and get your commercial learner permit (CLP) first. You can take CDL written tests up to twice a week. (mvd.newmexico.gov)
  2. You cannot take the skills test in the first 14 days after your CLP is first issued. (mvd.newmexico.gov)
  3. After finishing ELDT, contact a testing organization to schedule. The tester checks your ELDT completion before the test. (mvd.newmexico.gov)
  4. After you pass, bring your driver license, CLP and required documents to an MVD office that issues CDLs; your scores are verified electronically. Get your CDL before the CLP expires. (mvd.newmexico.gov)
